The Image That Lives
According to Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval, in their book The Message of the Sphinx, 1996, "the name 'Sphinx'
was a Greek corruption of the Egyptian name 'Sheshep-ankh Atum,'" which meant, 'the living image of Atum, after
Atum-Re the self-created sun-god, the first and original deity of the ancient Egyptian pantheon.'"
Sheshep-ankh Atum was, therefore, a name that was also a pun or a play on words: For "the living image of Atum,
the self-created sun-god," could also be interpreted as "the self-created image that lives."Or simply as,
"the image that lives."
